The Spirit Says It For You

This message is for to have her praying done in a language she does not have, by a woman who prays in her second language and feels she is always a bit late to her own thoughts

The feeling always arrives first, and it arrives in the other language. Not the wrong one. The first one. It comes up whole and immediate, in the language her mother used to call her in from the yard with, and then there is this small customs post it has to clear, and by the time it gets through, the thing she meant has been folded twice and something has fallen out of the fold.

So she prays in the language the prayers were in when she learned them. She is good at it. Her spelling is better than her manager's. None of that is the problem. The problem is the four seconds. Every night, four seconds behind herself, like watching a movie where the mouths do not match the sound.

She has apologized for it out loud, to God, more times than she has apologized to any human being. Sorry, I'm not saying this well. She says it at the start and she says it again at the end, and in between she does her best, and then she lies down feeling like a person who has mailed a postcard when she meant to arrive in person.

You do this too. You get to the end and you have the clear sense that what you delivered was a summary. Somewhere back there was the real thing, unedited, instant, in the words your grandmother would have used, and what actually left your mouth was the version with the corners rounded off. And you would like, one time, to be on time to your own heart.

Somebody is already doing the carrying

Here is the verse, and I want you to notice which half of it people usually quote and which half they usually skip.

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.Romans 8:26

We know not what we should pray for as we ought. Not you. Not the newcomer, not the one with the accent, not the woman who takes four seconds. We. The fluent ones. The ones who have prayed out loud in front of a hundred people in the language they were born into and never once had to carry a thought across a border. Paul puts himself in that sentence, and he could write.

So the gap you have been apologizing for is not your gap. It is the human gap. Yours has a visible seam in it, that is all, and a visible seam is not a bigger one.

You are praying with help right now, and the help started before your sentence did. The Holy Spirit does not make this up as He goes. He is holding you to what is written at Romans 8:26, and He does not wait for the translation to finish before He carries it.

Then read what He does with it. He makes intercession with groanings which cannot be uttered. Uttered. Said. Put into words. The Spirit's own praying is not in any language at all, which means it is not in the fluent one either. It runs underneath the whole business, at the level where the feeling arrived in the first place, before the customs post, before the folding.

You have an intercessor working at exactly the depth where your prayer starts, and none of it goes through a counter. That is the promise, word for word, at Romans 8:26, and the same Spirit stepped into that precise gap on purpose.

Nobody in the room is nearer than you

Now take that upstairs, into the thing you have not let yourself say: that you are a slightly provisional member. Welcome, obviously. Warmly welcome. But following about a third of it, laughing a half beat after everybody else, and quietly filing yourself under guest.

Pull that file. It is misfiled, and it has been for years.

If the Spirit's intercession happens below language, then fluency buys nothing at that level. The person who follows every word of a room is not closer in. They have easier access to the room, which is a real and ordinary advantage about rooms, and it is not access to God, and the two have been confused so often that people build whole quiet inferiorities on it.

You are a full member of this people, in the accent you already have, and you were never a guest here. Check Romans 8:26. It says exactly that about the infirmity, and His Spirit is the help it promised.

And nothing about you is the thing to be got past. Not the accent, not the pause while you find the word, not the way you count in your head in the language you count in, not the age you were when you arrived. That is not the price of entry being slowly paid off. It is a person, and the people of God is made of persons, and every one of them arrived with a mother tongue and a yard they were called in from.

It is already yours, this place among them, and it did not come with a language requirement attached. It stands written and it stands witnessed: Romans 8:26, and the same Spirit named in it is at that work while your sentence is still assembling itself.

The breakthrough

So stop paying the toll. There is no toll. The four seconds are real and they are not a fee, and you have been handing them over every night like a woman apologizing to a doctor for the shape of her own bones.

Think about what you have been doing with those seconds. You have been treating them as evidence in a case nobody is prosecuting, and the case has a title, and the title is I am not quite one of them. It has been running quietly under every evening for a long time. It runs on one exhibit, and the exhibit is a pause.

Here is the turn, and it is a relief rather than a triumph. You are not late to your own heart. You have been listening for the arrival at the wrong end. The prayer did not begin when the words got there. It began four seconds earlier, in the language the feeling came in, and there was Somebody there already, taking it from you before you had said anything at all.

You have been prayed with, every one of those nights, and not one of them was a summary. Scripture puts the intercession below every language there is, and it is His Spirit, not your vocabulary, who carries what you mean into the presence of God.

Declare this over yourself

You are not making a request here. You are saying out loud what is already yours in Christ, and the standing to say it was given to you, not achieved by fluency in anything. The Spirit makes the written word live as you speak it, and how and when He answers is His to decide. Say them in whatever language they come in.

  1. Gap between my heart and my English, you are not a border I have to clear. Romans 8:26 says the Spirit makes intercession with groanings that cannot be uttered, and He is at it now. I am at home here today, and the belonging never ran through the language.
  2. Apology I keep making for my own words, you are put out in the name of Jesus. God hears the thing that arrives before the sentence does, and He has heard it every night for years. I am a full member of His people in the accent I have.
  3. Lord, You pray for me underneath every language there is, and You started before I did. You call me Yours in the words my mother used, and You are not waiting on my grammar. I am no stranger here today, and I am done saying sorry at the start of my prayers.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
