One Spirit Put You In

This message is for to learn what did the joining, by a man who assumes that not understanding the customs means he never really got in

The sound he cannot get out of his head is the pages. Two hundred people turning to a place all at once, that dry rushing noise like wind in a cornfield, done in about two seconds. And him, forty-eight years old, still working down the index at the front with his thumb, looking for a book he has never heard anybody say out loud before.

He came to all this late. Nobody in his family did any of it, so he does not have the songs in him from childhood the way the woman next to him clearly does, singing the second verse without looking down once. He does not know what people mean when they shorten things. He nodded for a full year at a phrase he had completely misunderstood. When somebody says turn to the minor prophets he has to go by feel, and he has learned to open the book slowly so it looks deliberate.

Nobody in that room has ever been anything but kind to him. That is almost the worst part, because there is nothing to push against. They are warm and they mean it, and he sits there through the whole thing following maybe a third, and he goes home and thinks the thought he has thought for four years now, which is: they were all given this and I have been let in on sufferance, and one day somebody is going to work out that I never really got in.

You have thought a version of that. Maybe your third is a language, maybe it is a generation, maybe it is a whole country you did not grow up in, maybe it is that everybody else seems to have been handed a manual at eight years old. And you have quietly decided that the not-following is evidence. Let me take that evidence off the table, because Paul names in one sentence exactly what did the joining, and it is not fluency.

The verse names the agent

Here is the pit, said plainly. You have assumed that understanding is the door. Follow enough of it and you are in. Follow a third of it and you are a guest who has been treated kindly. That assumption feels humble. It is not humble, it is just wrong, and it has been charging you rent for four years.

Now watch what Paul does. He is writing to a church with people in it from every possible background, and he names the joining in one line, and the line has an agent in it.

You are in the body, and one Spirit put you there. 1 Corinthians 12:13 names the agent of the joining and the agent is the Spirit, and it has stood written that way since the first century.

For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.1 Corinthians 12:13

Notice what he lists. Jews or Gentiles. Bond or free. Those are not gentle differences. That is the widest cultural gap and the widest social gap in the whole Roman world, the two divides that decided what language you spoke, what you ate, what you were allowed to touch, and who would sit down with you. Paul puts both of them in the verse on purpose, and then says one body anyway.

He did not say the differences stopped mattering. He said they stopped being the door.

You have been on the inside of that sentence from the beginning. Scripture lists the very differences that were supposed to keep people out and then says one body regardless. It was the Spirit who did the putting in, and never the room.

And if the Spirit did it, then think about what could not have done it. Not attendance. Not knowing where Habakkuk sits. Not being able to sing the second verse from memory. Not having been raised in it. Those are all things a person picks up, or does not, and picking things up is not what the verse says happened to you.

The room is what moved, not the newcomer

Now let me show you something that gets read as ancient administration and is actually one of the tenderest things in the New Testament.

There came a moment when the church had to decide what to require of people coming in from a completely different culture, who did not know the customs, could not read the room, and had no family history in any of it. The whole question was on the table: do they have to learn our way of doing things first?

The answer they came to, in Acts 15:19, was that they would not trouble them. That is the phrase. Not trouble them. The room took the weight. The people already inside adjusted, and the ones coming in were not handed a syllabus.

You are not a guest here and you never have been. Acts 15:19 records a room deciding not to trouble the newcomers, it is written down, and the Spirit was in the deciding.

That is the shape of this thing all the way down. Ephesians 2 says there was a middle wall of partition and God broke it. Not lowered it, not put a gate in it with a language requirement. Broke it. Which means there is no wall left anywhere for you to be on the wrong side of, and there has not been one for two thousand years.

You have full standing in a house where the wall is already down. His Spirit walked you straight through the gap where a middle wall used to stand, and Ephesians 2:14 is where the demolition is written down.

So the page-turning sound is not evidence of anything except that you came in later than some other people. That is a fact about a calendar. It is not a fact about your standing, and I would like you to stop treating those as the same fact.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and I want you to feel how much lighter it is than what you have been carrying.

You have been sitting in that seat doing an examination nobody set. Every service, quietly scoring yourself out of a hundred on comprehension, and treating the score as your membership status. Meanwhile the verse that decides the matter does not mention comprehension once. It mentions one Spirit, and it uses the perfect tense: we have been made to drink.

That is finished business. It is not being reviewed at the end of the year. It does not go up when you finally learn where the minor prophets are and it does not go down on a Sunday when you understand almost nothing, and there will be Sundays like that, and they will mean nothing at all.

Follow a third. Follow a tenth. Follow all of it. The number describes your familiarity with a culture. It has never once described your place in the body of Christ.

You are a full member, and the follow rate has nothing to do with it. 1 Corinthians 12:13 settled that door in writing and never once mentioned fluency. There is no examiner standing at it, and the Spirit who carried you through has never appointed one.

Declare this over yourself

A believer has standing to speak the word out loud, not because his wording is strong but because he is in Christ and the word is strong, and Jesus taught His people to say a thing and not waver in the heart. The Spirit is what makes a written line live when a man opens his mouth. So say these as a man agreeing with God, and however He answers them and whenever He answers them, leave that with the Father, whose will toward you is good.

  1. Customs I never learned, you are not the door and you never were. 1 Corinthians 12:13 says one Spirit baptized me into one body, and He did it without a vocabulary test. I am inside, and I was inside on the day I could not find Habakkuk.
  2. Verdict that I never really got in, you are overturned in the name of Jesus. God broke the middle wall down and wrote it in the record, so there is no wall left for me to be on the wrong side of. Take the shame of the turning pages with you.
  3. Lord, You put me into one body by one Spirit and You never asked me to learn a dialect first. You are the God of every language on the earth and the God who broke the wall. I am no stranger here, and I never was.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
