He Came For A People

The radiators come back on at ten past six in the morning, and the whole building hears it long before anybody feels it.

It starts under the floor as a knock. One pipe passes the news to the next pipe and the next, up through four floors of an old brick building, tick and clank and tick, like something enormous turning over in its sleep. Four days the boiler has been out. Four days of coats worn indoors, of hot water bottles, of the woman on three sleeping in two pairs of socks and a wool hat, of everybody being very cheerful about it by the mailboxes and nobody being cheerful about it at two in the morning.

Down in the basement there is a man nobody in the building could pick out of a line. He has been down there since the middle of the night with a flashlight held in his teeth and his breath showing in the beam. And at some point in the dark he gets it lit, and heat begins to climb the pipes of a building full of strangers.

Doors open all along the hallway. The girls from the end apartment come out in blanket capes and stand on the warm floor grate, laughing at their own steam. Somebody taps a radiator with a wooden spoon to check that it is real. There is that particular smell of warm dust burning off cold metal, and the low winter sun is coming in through the window at the end of the corridor, and the whole floor is standing there in the middle of it, glad.

And in her own room, with both palms flat on the ribs of the radiator, a thought arrives that she has had her entire life in one form or another.

That was not for me. That was for the building.

You know that thought. You have said the sentence about the cross in exactly that voice. He died for everyone. Everyone in general. Which has somehow come to mean nobody in particular, and certainly not you in particular, because you are not particular, you are only standing in the vicinity of something enormous that was done for people, plural, whoever they turned out to be.

What happened to the word everyone

Everyone is a word that can be spoken from two positions, and from the two positions it is not the same word.

From outside, everyone is a fog. It has no edges and no faces in it. Nothing addressed to everyone was ever addressed to you, because everyone is where a sentence goes when it is not going anywhere. A person can hear that word for thirty years and stay cold in the middle of it.

From inside, everyone is a list. The heat did not reach the building. Buildings do not get warm. Rooms get warm, one at a time, in an order, and the order that morning ran through the grate the girls were standing on, and the pipe behind the door of the man who works nights, and the two cold hands of a woman who thought she was watching somebody else's good news.

You are one of the people Christ came for, and you are one of them by name and not by proximity. Titus 2:14 says He gave Himself in order to make a people His own, and the Holy Spirit is not circulating that notice to whoever happens to be nearest the door. He is putting it into your hands.

Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.Titus 2:14

Read what the verse does with its own grammar. It does not say He gave Himself and hoped a people would form. It says He gave Himself so that there would be one. The people is not a side effect of the cross. The people is the point of it. He came with an object in mind, and the object was plural, and the plural had an inside, and there is no such thing as a plural that is empty.

That is the whole trouble with hearing it from the hallway. You have been standing outside a word with your own name inside it.

You have a place among God's people, and it was not arranged by anything you managed to attend. It is written, and it was written long before you were cold, and the same Spirit who put it in writing is the reason your hands are on the metal now instead of only hearing about heat.

The cross had an object, and the object is a people

Here is the thing nobody says plainly enough, so let it be said plainly.

When a person is loved as one of many, they will always suspect they were loved as an average. That is the quiet arithmetic that gets done in a lot of hearts. If He came for all, He came for the general shape of us, and the general shape is not me, it is the sum of me and a great many others, and what a sum has never done in the history of the world is get up in the night and light a boiler.

But God does not love the way a statistic loves. He does not deal in the average of a people. He redeemed a people the way a man warms a building, which is to say room by room, and there is no way to warm a building that skips a room and still counts as warming the building.

You were inside the object of the cross before you had any idea there was an object. Titus 2:14 says for us and not for whoever, and His Spirit does not read that word any smaller than God wrote it.

This is why the belonging is not something you assemble. You did not vote yourself into this. There was no meeting. A people is constituted from outside itself, by somebody else's act, and the act here was a cross, and the act is finished, and finished things do not require your participation in order to have happened.

Which also means the thing you have been quietly afraid of is not on the table. You have wondered whether a person can be part of a people they have never sat down with. The answer runs the other way around. Sitting down with them was never what made anybody part of it. He made a people, and He put you in it, and the putting was done by hands with holes in them and not by a hallway full of neighbors, however glad that hallway was.

It is already settled that you are His, and nothing about this week reopened the question. Scripture keeps it in the past tense, He gave, He redeemed, and the Holy Spirit keeps it there too on the days you would rather it were still up for discussion.
