The clip at the top of the board snaps when he turns a page, and that is the sound she hears first, every time, before she has seen anybody at all. Snap. Somewhere behind her, over by the walk-in cooler, a man in a pressed shirt is writing.
She is nineteen and she works the early shift in a bakery kitchen that smells of yeast and hot sugar and the inside of the oven. Twice a year a man comes and looks at the same forty things. The temperature log. The date on the cream. The gap under the mixer where the flour collects and nobody can reach. He is perfectly polite. He says good morning and then he says nothing at all for forty minutes, and it is the nothing that gets into her, because the nothing is where the writing happens.
She learns to work with her shoulders up around her ears. She learns to hear a footstep as a verdict. And somewhere in the years after, without one deliberate thought about it, the man in the pressed shirt quietly took over the job of being God.
So she prays. She has prayed since she was small and she has never stopped. And right at the end of it, in the pause after the amen, she braces. Because the pause is where the writing happens, and He has been walking the floor the whole time, and He has certainly seen the gap under the mixer.
You know that brace. It arrives in the shoulders about half a second after you stop speaking. Somebody, and they may well have meant it kindly, taught you that God comes into a room the way an inspector comes into a room, with a route, a list, and an opinion he is about to write down and take away with him.
Which has left you in the strangest position of all. You believe every word of this. And you have never once been able to sit down in the same room as the God of it.
What kind of walking is it
Stay with me on one verb, because the whole of your afternoon is sitting inside it.
Leviticus is a book people skim, and chapter 26 is the stretch where God stops giving instructions and starts making promises, and the promises are addressed to a people rather than to a person. He says He will set His dwelling among them. He says His soul will not turn away from them. And then He says this.
And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people.Leviticus 26:12
The word under walk there is not the ordinary word for crossing a floor. It is the reflexive form, the one that means to walk about, to go to and fro, to move around a place habitually, the way a person moves around a house they live in. It is the same form used of God in the garden in the cool of the day. It is not a route. It is not an errand. It is the gait of somebody at home.
An inspector walks a floor too. But look hard at the difference and do not let it blur. An inspector's walk has an exit built into it. He came in order to produce a document about you and carry the document somewhere else, and every step he takes is already on its way out of your building. That is what your shoulders have been braced against for years, and I am not going to stand here and tell you the bracing was silly. It was learned, and it was learned honestly, and a body that learned something honestly does not put it down because somebody says put it down.
But God did not say above you. He did not say over you, and He did not say through you, the way weather goes through a street. He said among. In your midst. Inside the room, on the same floor, at the same height as the people.
You are living in a house God moves around in, and He is not on His way anywhere else. He promised exactly that in Leviticus 26:12, in His own voice, long before anybody had behaved well enough to earn a line of it, and the Holy Spirit is what turns it from a sentence you admire into a room you are standing in.
And notice what an inspector God produces, because she is a very particular kind of believer and there are a great many of her. She is accurate. She can give you the doctrine cleanly and she is usually right. She is also tired all the way down, and she has never in her life sat down.
And ye shall be my people
Now the last clause, which is the one you have been reading past for years.
And ye shall be my people. Ye. It is plural in the Hebrew and it is plural in the old English too, and the plural is not decoration. God is not saying thou shalt be my person. He is saying there is going to be a people, and He is the one making it, and the making is His work from end to end.
That matters enormously to a woman with an inspector in her head, and here is exactly why. An inspection produces a result. A result is something you get at the end, it can go either way, and it can be taken back at the next visit. A covenant does not work like that at all. A covenant is a standing arrangement declared at the front, and everything that follows happens inside it rather than in order to obtain it.
You are one of God's people this morning, and you assembled no part of that yourself. Scripture holds that clause in the plural on purpose, God's own promise to constitute a people rather than to approve a candidate, and the same Spirit who made a people out of a crowd that was not one is holding you steady inside it while you read.
So when the pause comes after your amen, hear what is actually happening in it. He has not gone quiet in order to write. He has stayed.
Let me be careful here, because there is a cheap version of this and the cheap version helps nobody. I am not telling you that God is easygoing about sin or that holiness turned out to be a misunderstanding. The chapter you just read is not a soft chapter. I am telling you that the holiness came into the room and stayed in the room, which is a far more serious thing than holiness standing at the door with a clipboard, and it is also the only version of it that has ever made a person free.
You have a God who lives at your height, and nothing in your week has moved Him up onto a walkway above you. That is written down and it is not a figure of speech, and His Spirit does not hand it to you as a probation with conditions in small print underneath.
Here is the turn, and it is not a task.
You have been waiting to pass. That is what the brace is. It is a body waiting on a result it believes has not come in yet, and it has been waiting so long that the waiting has begun to feel like reverence.
The result came in. It came in before the file was ever opened. God spoke first, out of His own mouth, and said He would dwell among a people and walk among them and be their God. The New Testament stands on the same ground and says the same thing: in Christ, God set His address inside a people He redeemed at the cost of His own blood, and He has no plans to move.
You are inside the covenant rather than outside it waiting on the outcome of a visit. He promised it in writing, plainly, and the Spirit of God is the seal on it, not your steadiness this week and not the state of the gap under the mixer.
Now take this next part slowly, because it is the part that loosens an inspector's grip. If God walks among His people, then the room you are in is not being visited. It is being lived in. There is nothing to prepare, because He did not arrive this morning. He has been here, at your height, through the whole of the two years you would rather not discuss.
You have His company right now, as you read this line, and it is already settled and not pending. The word says plainly that He walks among His people, and His Spirit keeps you inside the company that promise describes.
Declare this over yourself
You have standing to speak, and not because your voice carries. You have it because the authority is delegated, handed down to you from inside a covenant God declared first, and because the Spirit who breathed the word is the one who makes it live when a believer says it back. Jesus said a person may speak to a mountain and not doubt in their heart. So speak. And leave the outcome where it has always belonged, with a good God whose will is kinder than your preference.
- Silence at the end of my prayers, you are not a report being written up about me. God said He would walk among His people and be their God, and He said it before anybody had earned a word of it. You are the sound of Someone staying.
- Verdict that I am on inspection, you are overturned in the name of Jesus. I am not a site being reviewed and I never was. I am one of the people God walks among, and that ground was laid by His promise and not by my performance.
- Lord, You said You would walk among Your people, and You have never once been above them. You are not at the door with a list in Your hand. You are in the room, at my height, and I am one of Yours today.
