Needed Among Them1 Corinthians 12:18

He Set Them, Every One

This message is for to be placed on purpose rather than left over, by a woman who has always assumed she ended up where she is by default

She found out by accident, eight years in, that she had been the second choice. Somebody in HR said it the way people say harmless things, over a plate of cookies at a leaving party: oh, you only got it because Diane went to the other firm. He laughed. She laughed. She has thought about it roughly once a week ever since.

The trouble is that it confirmed something. The apartment, only because the first one fell through. The town, only because of the job. The people she sees, such as they are, only because somebody's cousin needed a fourth. Pull the thread on any one of them and there is a coincidence at the end of it, or somebody else's decision, or a door that happened to be open on a Tuesday.

A whole life, she has decided, assembled out of what was left over.

She would never say that out loud. It sounds like self-pity and it does not feel like self-pity from the inside. It feels like accuracy. And you have run the same arithmetic, in the shower, on the drive, at the end of a long day, and you have landed on the sentence underneath it, the one you would not say to a living soul: if I disappeared tomorrow, I do not honestly think anybody would be short of anything.

The verb in that verse is set

But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.1 Corinthians 12:18

Read it slowly, because the sentence is doing something with every single word and it is easy to skate over.

Hath set. Not ended up. Not were left with. Set, which is what you do with a bone, or a stone in a ring, or a table before people arrive. It is a deliberate verb and it takes a deliberate hand.

Every one of them. Not the notable ones. Not the ones with a title. Every one, which is the phrase that closes the loophole you have been climbing through for years.

As it hath pleased him. Pleasure. Not necessity, not efficiency, not the awkward arithmetic of who was left after the good ones were taken. He liked it. He did it because He wanted to.

You are set among God's people by a deliberate hand, and none of it happened because a door was open on a Tuesday. None of that is mine to say. It stands in 1 Corinthians 12:18 over His own name, and the Holy Spirit is not in the habit of putting people down at random.

Now, the honest part. That verse does not tell you why you live in that town or how you ended up at that firm, and this piece is not going to invent an explanation for either. What it tells you is what your placement among God's people rests on, and it does not rest on the arithmetic. The arithmetic can be entirely true. Diane can have gone to the other firm. And the placing can still have been done on purpose, by God, because it pleased Him.

You have a part in this body that was given rather than inherited by default, and it was given because He wanted you in it. 1 Corinthians 12:18. That is the whole of the authority for it, and His Spirit is the whole of the power, and neither of them anywhere says left over.

What a body actually needs from a member

Here is where people usually take a wrong turn, and I am not going to take it with you. The next move is supposed to be somebody telling you what your role is. Finding your slot. Signing up. Getting placed.

No. Read the verse again. You are already placed. Somebody already did that, and it was not a committee.

And notice what the body needs from a member, which is not the same as what an organization needs from a volunteer. An organization needs output. A body needs the member to be there, connected, alive, part of it. A hand that is asleep is still a hand and the body does not vote it out at the end of the quarter.

It is already settled that you are needed among them, and your usefulness this month is not what settled it. Written down, witnessed, and never withdrawn: 1 Corinthians 12:18, with the same Spirit who did the placing keeping you exactly where He put you.

That matters most for the reader with the least to give. If today you can do almost nothing, if the illness or the exhaustion or the season has taken nearly all of it, then hear this carefully: the verse does not scale your membership to your capacity. It does not say He set the members according to what each could contribute. It says He set them, every one, as it pleased Him.

You were set in this body at full membership, and a hard year has not reduced the share. Promised in writing at 1 Corinthians 12:18, and His Spirit did the setting Himself, and neither half of that scales to your capacity.

Still, there is something you can actually do. Not a role. Not a slot. One real thing, small, that is genuinely available to you today, and we will get to it.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is not a promotion. Nothing is being handed to you today except an accurate account of where you already stand.

You have been reading your life as a sequence of leftovers, and the reading is what has to change, not the life. The coincidences stay coincidences. Diane still went to the other firm. What is not true, and never was, is the conclusion you drew about your standing among God's people from a stack of ordinary events.

You are in this body because it pleased God to put you in it, and that was decided somewhere your circumstances never had a vote. The written word carries it and the Spirit carries you, and 1 Corinthians 12:18 is the page a body with no spare parts is written on.

The sentence you would not say out loud can go now. Not because somebody has proven you would be missed, and not because anybody is promising you a crowd. It can go because it was answering a question that God had already answered on other grounds entirely.

Declare this over yourself

You are not applying for anything here. What you are about to say is already yours in Christ, and the standing to say it was given to you rather than earned by being anybody's first choice. The Spirit makes the written word live as you speak it, and what He does with your years is His to decide. Say them out loud.

  1. Story that I ended up here by default, you are not the account of my life. God set the members, every one of them, and 1 Corinthians 12:18 says it pleased Him to do it. I am placed here on purpose, and my part is not decorative.
  2. Idea that I am the spare person here, you are put out in the name of Jesus. The body of Christ was assembled with no spare parts in it, and a hard year has not reduced my share of it. I am needed among them today, at the strength I actually have.
  3. Lord, You set the members every one of them, and You did it because it pleased You. You have never once looked at me and seen what was left over. I am placed here on purpose, and I am done reading my life as a stack of coincidences.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
