Kept TogetherJohn 17:11

He Asked The Father To Keep You Together

This message is for to overhear the prayer Jesus prayed about this exact thing, by a man who has never considered that the keeping of the people of God was something Jesus asked for out loud

He was nine years old, standing in the hallway at five in the morning with his feet cold on the boards, and through the wall he could hear his father praying. Not words at first. Just the shape of a voice, low, going along steadily the way a truck engine goes along.

Then his own name came through the wall. Just the once, quiet, in the middle of a sentence he could not make out. And he stood there in the dark hallway with his hand flat on the door frame and did not go in, because going in would have ended it, and he wanted to hear it more than he wanted to be in the room. He never told his dad. Forty years and he never told him.

The man in that hallway is fifty-three now. His father is gone, the house was sold twice over, and he has lost more people than he can put in order. Not through anything dramatic. A move for work. Another move. A phone that just stopped ringing one year. Two friendships that thinned out so gradually he could not name the week they ended. He is not a bitter man about any of it. He simply looked up one day and there was nobody left who had known him longer than four years.

Which is why the offer of belonging does not land on him the way people think it will. He hears it and something behind his ribs says: even if I found people, I would lose them the way I have lost everybody else. So what is the use of standing me next to a door.

And I know that sentence. If you have said it, you were not being negative. You were reporting a pattern honestly, which is the most reasonable thing a man can do with the evidence he has. So I am not going to argue with the pattern. I am going to take you back to a hallway, put your ear against a wall, and let you hear who is praying and what He is asking for.

Somebody prayed this out loud

Name the pit before anything else. The pit is not loneliness. You have lived with loneliness and you are managing it. The pit is that you have concluded the holding is your job, and that you are bad at your job, and that everything eventually comes apart on your watch because it always has.

Now go and stand outside a room on the last night of Jesus's life.

He is praying out loud in front of the men He has walked with for three years. John is standing there writing none of it down at the time and remembering all of it afterward. And in the middle of that prayer, He turns to the Father and asks for one specific thing about His people.

You are being prayed for, and you were prayed for before you were born. John 17:11 records Him asking out loud for the keeping. Two thousand years downstream a man can stand in a hallway and hear it, and that hearing is the Spirit's own doing.

And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.John 17:11

Read what He asks for. Keep them. Keep them through Your own name. That they may be one. He is not asking the men to keep each other. He is not giving them a technique for maintaining fellowship. He turns His face away from them entirely and asks the Father to do the keeping, in the Father's own name, on the Father's own strength.

And in case you think you are outside the range of that prayer, He says a few verses later that He is not praying for those men only, but for everybody who would come to believe through their word. That is the widest door in Scripture and you walked through it the day you believed.

You have a place inside that prayer, and it was not added later. John 17:20 puts you inside it in writing, and by His Spirit a request made in an upper room is still in the air on an ordinary Tuesday.

Whose hands the keeping is in

Now let me say the thing that will either land or will not, and I want to say it slowly.

You have been operating as the maintenance department for every relationship you have ever had. Not out of pride. Out of fear. Somewhere back down the line you decided that if you did not hold it, it would go, and the evidence has been kind enough to agree with you often enough to keep the theory alive.

The prayer in John 17 puts that job somewhere else. Keep them, He says, and He says it to the Father. The verb goes upward. And everywhere else in the New Testament that this comes up, the hands are the same hands. Jesus says of everyone the Father gave Him that He would lose nothing. Jude says He is able to keep you from falling and present you faultless. Not able to help you keep yourself. Able to keep you.

You are being kept, and it was never assigned to your grip. Jude 24 says He is able to keep you from falling and it stands written that way. Go looking for where that keeping is happening and it is happening in you, which is what the Spirit is for.

I am not going to tell you that people are coming. I do not know that and nobody honest does, and I am not going to hand you a comforting picture of a future kitchen full of friends, because if it did not happen you would have one more thing to grieve and one more reason to distrust a man with a Bible.

What I can tell you is what has been settled, and it is not a forecast. It is that your place among God's people is held by God, that Jesus asked out loud for exactly this, and that He is still asking. Hebrews says He lives always to make intercession. Present tense. This morning. While you were still asleep and while nobody was keeping anything.

You are held together by a prayer that has not stopped. Hebrews 7:25 says He ever lives to make intercession, written in the present tense, and an ordinary week is exactly where the Spirit carries a thing like that.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is a load coming off rather than a load going on.

The sentence you have been living under is: I lose people. And that sentence is a report about your history and it is accurate, and it has been quietly promoted into a prophecy about your standing with God, which it was never qualified to be. What happens to friendships in a life full of moving is one subject. Who holds your place among the people of God is a completely different subject, and only one of the two was ever in your hands.

You do not have to get better at holding. You are not going to be graded on your grip. The keeping was asked for by the Son, granted by the Father, and is being carried out by the Spirit right now, in you, while you sit there with the evidence of forty years telling you it cannot be so.

The evidence is about people leaving. It has nothing to say about God keeping. Let it speak on its own subject and no further.

You are kept among God's people today, and it does not depend on your strength this year. Philippians 1:6 promised that what God begins He finishes, and the Spirit is doing the finishing.

Declare this over yourself

You have standing to speak this, not because your voice is strong but because of Christ in you and the word He left in writing, and Jesus taught His own people to say a thing and not waver in the heart. The Spirit is what makes a written line live in a man's mouth. So say these plainly, as a man agreeing with God, and let the timing and the working out of them be His to decide, because the Father's will toward you is good.

  1. Pattern of losing everybody, you are not what decides this. John 17:11 has Jesus asking the Father out loud to keep His people in His own name, and the keeping was never handed to me. I am kept among God's people, and my grip is not what is doing it.
  2. Verdict that I lose everyone, you are overturned in the name of Jesus. Jude 24 says He is able to keep me from falling, and the written word says able, not likely. Take forty years of evidence with you when you go.
  3. Lord Jesus, You prayed for this out loud on the last night before the cross and You asked the Father to keep us in His own name. You are praying still, and You are holding what I could never hold. I am one of Yours, and the keeping is Your work and not mine.
