The heater is up too high and she has not taken her hand off the gear shift.
She is parked at the far end of the lot, in the corner by the fence, engine running. It is not the one she left. It is a different one, forty minutes away, chosen for the single reason that nobody inside it has ever heard her name. She has been sitting here eleven minutes. She can see the door from where she is. Somebody props it open with a fire extinguisher and goes back in.
Her hand goes to the handle. Her body says no. It is not a thought and it does not arrive as words. It is a flat refusal somewhere under the ribs, the kind a body makes on its own, and she has learned in three years that arguing with it changes nothing except how long she cries afterward.
So she puts it in reverse. On the way home she stops and buys milk she does not need, so that the trip will have been for something.
You know that lot. And you know the messages, which are the strange part, because not one of the people sending them is your enemy. We saved you a seat. You would love our pastor, he is nothing like that. It has been three years, love. Somebody told you the enemy would be delighted with this arrangement, and they meant it as encouragement, and it landed like a hand pressing between your shoulder blades.
They are kind. They are genuinely kind, and they want you at a table, and wanting that is not a crime. And every one of those sentences lands on a body that has already tried.
There are three speeds in one verse
I want to walk you through a single verse very slowly, because there is more in it than people usually take out.
Isaiah 40 opens with comfort. Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, spoken over a nation at the far end of a very long exile, people who had lost the building, the city, the singing and most of their confidence. It is not addressed to the strong ones among them. It is addressed to the whole worn-out lot of them. And then, eleven verses in, the prophet reaches for a picture.
He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.Isaiah 40:11
Count the speeds. There are three of them inside one sentence, and they are not the same speed.
There is the flock, being fed, moving along at the ordinary rate of a flock. There are the lambs, gathered up into an arm and carried against the chest, and a carried lamb is not walking at all, not slowly, not a little, not at any percentage. And then there are the ewes heavy with young, and the verb there means to lead along to water, to bring somebody on at a rate they can actually sustain, and the word carries gentleness inside itself rather than having it added on afterward.
One shepherd. Three speeds. Nobody is driven at the pace of the fastest animal, because a shepherd who does that arrives somewhere on time with half a flock.
You are being carried inside the flock rather than set down outside it. Isaiah 40:11 has the shepherd doing the carrying and the lamb doing none of the walking, and it is His Spirit, not your legs, that has kept you inside the flock through the whole of the last three years.
Here is the thing your body has been assuming, and it has been assuming it quietly, without ever putting it into a sentence. You have decided that being carried is a suspension. That you are on a list somewhere, a sort of sick list, and the flock is up ahead getting on with things while you sit in a parking lot with the engine running. That is not what the verse says and it is not what a shepherd means. The lamb in the arms is not behind the flock. The lamb in the arms is in the safest position in the entire field.
He goes in front, and He calls
Now let me say something that does not get said out loud often enough.
A herd is moved from behind. That is what herding is. Pressure at the back, noise, a dog on the flank, a body of animals pushed forward by something they cannot see and would rather get away from. It works, in the sense that the animals end up in the pen.
That is not how the shepherds in Scripture moved sheep, and it is not how Jesus describes His own work. He describes going out in front of them and calling, and the sheep following because they know the voice. In front. With His voice. No pressure at the back at all.
So take the feeling between your shoulder blades and hold it up to that for a moment. Whatever it is, it is not the Shepherd's method. I am not saying the people sending those messages are bad people, because they are not, and I am not going to hand you a case against anybody today. I am saying that a hand in the back and a voice up ahead are two completely different things, and your body has been telling the difference correctly the whole time.
You have a Shepherd who goes in front and calls rather than one who presses from behind. That is written into John 10 and into Isaiah 40:11 both, and the Spirit of God is the one voice in all of this that has never once pushed you.
And now the other half, the half about the building, and I am going to be plain and then leave it alone. I am not going to argue your case against anybody and I am not going to defend anybody either. That whole courtroom is closed today. Nor am I going to tell you to go back, and I am not going to tell you never to go back, and I am not putting a date on anything.
What I will say is this. Your standing among God's people was never issued by a room, which means no room had the authority to cancel it.
You are still one of His people, and no building ever held that in the first place. Scripture never once ties a person's place among God's own to a doorway, and the Holy Spirit has not moved you out of something He Himself put you into.
Here is the turn, and there is no destination attached to it.
You have been trying to answer a question that was never yours to answer: whether you are still in. You have been trying to answer it with your legs, in a parking lot, against a body that will not cooperate, and every failed attempt has felt like fresh evidence.
The question is closed. It was closed by God, in advance, in words, and it was closed about a people rather than about your Sunday. What happened in that room happened. It was real and I will not minimize a minute of it. It did not have the authority to remove you, because it never had the authority to have placed you.
You have a place among God's people this evening, and it is already settled rather than under review. He promised comfort to a whole worn-out people and not just to the strong ones in it, and His Spirit is what makes that comfort arrive at the pace you can actually take it.
So let the lot be a lot. Let the door be a door. Neither of them is the border of anything.
Declare this over yourself
Christ in you, and not your strength and not your attendance, is what gives an ordinary person the right to speak over their own life. The Spirit is what makes a written word live when it is said out loud. Jesus said a person may speak to a mountain and not doubt in their heart, so speak these. And then leave every outcome, including anything at all about buildings, in the hands of God. His timing in this is gentler than the timing you have been handed.
- Parking lot with the engine still running, you are not the border of God's people. God said He gathers the lambs with His arm and carries them against Himself, and that is where I have been this whole time. I am inside the flock in this car.
- Sentence that says I fell out of it, you are overturned in the name of Jesus. My place among God's people was never issued by a room, so no room could cancel it. What happened there did not remove me, and it never had the authority to.
- Lord, You are the Shepherd who goes out in front and calls, and You have never once pressed a tired sheep from behind. You are not beginning with me now. I am Yours, I am carried, and You are keeping me at the pace I can bear.
