He Assembles The Ones Who Limp

The crew starts loading at five, which means the tailgate goes down at four fifty and the jokes start before anybody is properly awake.

He is sitting on that tailgate with his boots on the gravel, and he is handing things up, which is what a man does when he cannot carry them. Rock bar. Two picks. The heavy end of the crosscut that used to be his and now goes to somebody nineteen years old with no idea what he has been given. They are good about it. Nobody makes a thing of it. Somebody puts a hand on his shoulder on the way past and says see you tonight, and means it.

He watches them go up in the half light, and the last thing he sees is the line of them bending into the first switchback, and then it is just him and a truck and a knee that has its own opinions about mornings.

And the sentence he has made his peace with, the one he says to himself in the quiet after the last headlamp goes round the corner, is: when I am right again, I will go back up.

You have your own version of that sentence. Yours is not about a mountain. Something happened in a building with a cross on it, and whatever it was, it was enough that you have not walked into one since, and you would rather not go through it again here, and you do not have to.

But the sentence is the same shape. You will count again when you are over it. You will take your place back when you can walk on it. Until then you are the man on the tailgate, handing things up, being good about it.

The word for it is limp, and He said it first

There is a prophet who puts this exact man in one line, and he does it seven hundred years before Christ, and he does it in a sentence about a gathering.

Micah is writing to people who have been scattered. Not scattered in a metaphor. Marched out, taken apart, the whole national furniture broken up and carted off. He is describing the day it gets put back together, and the interesting thing is not that he describes it. Everybody describes it. The interesting thing is who he says is standing there when it happens.

In that day, saith the LORD, will I assemble her that halteth, and I will gather her that is driven out, and her that I have afflicted;Micah 4:6

Halteth is the old word for limps. It is the same word used of Jacob after the night at the river, when he came away with a hip that never worked right again, and it is worth noticing that the limp arrived at the same moment as the new name. He did not get the name once the walking improved.

So read Micah's sentence for its grammar and not its atmosphere. There is one verb doing the work, and the verb is gather, and the objects of it are the limping and the driven out. Not the recovered. Not the ones who have processed it. The gait is the description of who is at the assembly, and God is the one who wrote it down that way.

You are one of the ones He assembles, and He named the limp in the same breath as the gathering rather than as the thing to be sorted out first. That is not a kind reading of Micah 4:6, it is the plain order of its own clauses, and it is the Holy Spirit who applies an old promise to a man sitting in a truck at five in the morning.

One honest word about the third clause, because you can read. Micah is looking back over an exile that his own nation went through, and he is not standing over your life explaining it. Nothing in this piece says that what happened to you was sent to teach you something. I do not know what happened to you. What I know is which people are named at the assembly point, and you are on the list by the exact feature you have been treating as your disqualification.

Recovery was never the entry requirement

Here is the thing you have quietly believed, and it is worth saying out loud so you can look at it.

You believe there is a door, and the door has a standard, and the standard is that a man ought to be able to talk about it without his voice going strange. You are not asking for perfect. You are asking for functional. And until then you have taken yourself off the list, gently, without any fuss, and you have been good about it, and nobody had to do it for you.

But nothing about a people works that way, because a people is not a performance and it never was one. A family does not stop counting a member during the year he is sick. A nation does not remove a man from its census because he cannot march. The counting is not a reward for condition. It is a statement about who he is.

You have a place among God's people that is not held open by your recovery and cannot be closed by your condition. Scripture says the gathering is of the limping, which means the standing was never issued on the basis of gait, and His Spirit is not waiting at a door with a clipboard.

And notice what that does to the two years. If the standing was never held by the room, then the time you have spent out of rooms is not a gap in your record. There is no record with a gap in it. The clock you have been watching is not attached to anything.

You were counted through every one of those two years, and there is no missing stretch to be made up now. Two years of not going anywhere did not read as a suspension to the Spirit who has been with you in them, and Micah 4:6 describes a gathering rather than a probation.
