There is a box in most families that nobody has ever named properly. In hers it lives on the top shelf of the hall closet, and everything in it is the survivor of something. One earring. A key to a house that was sold before she was married. Three buttons off a coat that went to the thrift store years ago. A flat tin holding two screws with no memory attached to them. The family calls it the miscellaneous box, and they have called it that so long that nobody hears the word anymore.
Saturday morning, first light coming in low and level across the kitchen table, and she has the whole shelf down because she has finally had enough of it. Halfway through the box, wrapped in a dish towel gone stiff at the folds, she finds her grandmother's hand bell. Brass. Heavier than it looks. Green at the seam where nineteen years got in.
She rings it once against her palm, not meaning anything by it. And the whole hallway takes the note. Clear and round and completely whole, no rattle anywhere in it, a sound with no apology in it at all. A bell that has sat in a box of leftovers since before her second child was born, ringing exactly like the thing it was made to be.
So she says it out loud, laughing a little so that it will not land too hard, the way you say a true thing you have already made your peace with. "That is me. Miscellaneous." And you have said your own version of it, have you not. Not bitterly, and that is what makes it so hard to get hold of. A spare part in the kingdom. Whatever God happened to have lying around. You say it first, lightly, because a joke you make about yourself cannot be made about you by anybody else. Then you set the bell on the windowsill over the sink where it catches the light, and you get on with your Saturday.
Nobody pours a bell by accident
Let me say the hard part out loud before anything lifts, because this has been carried politely for a long time and politeness is heavy.
There are two ways of ending up inside something, and from the inside they feel similar for about a year. You can be permitted in, and you can be made for it. Permitted is a door somebody held open for you. It is real kindness and you are genuinely grateful for it, and underneath the gratitude sits one small cold fact that never quite leaves the room: a door that was held can be let go of. So you stay useful. You stay easy to have around. You are careful never to take up more space than you were handed.
Now hear how God describes the way His people came to be a people. There is not one word in it about admitting anybody.
This people have I formed for myself; they shall shew forth my praise.Isaiah 43:21
Formed. That is the potter's verb and the foundry's verb, the word for something poured on purpose into a shape that was decided while the metal was still liquid. Nobody assembles a bell. Nobody bolts one together out of what was left in the tray and hopes for a note. A bell is cast in a single pour, and the sound it would make in a hallway nineteen years later was put into it before it cooled.
You are one of a people God formed on purpose, and you were not slid in at the side to make up a number. Isaiah 43:21 says formed and it does not say admitted, and the Spirit who did that forming has never once gone back over His own work looking for the piece He could take out again.
And look who He formed them for. For myself, He says. Not to fill a slot on somebody's list. Not because a people were required and you happened to be within reach. He made a people because He wanted a people, and He wanted them for Himself, which is the only reason in the sentence and the only one there needs to be.
You have a place among them that was decided before you were ever awake enough to want it. That is written into the text and not into my good opinion of you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carried it across three thousand years and set it down on your kitchen table this morning.
Permitted can be taken back. Formed cannot.
Here is why the difference is not a word game.
If you are in by permission, then every good week is evidence for your defense and every empty week is a mark against you, and you are the only person in the building keeping that score. It is exhausting in a way you cannot explain to anyone, because from the outside it simply looks like you are a helpful woman. Nobody can see the ledger. You would be embarrassed to show it to them.
If you were formed, the whole scoring apparatus has nothing left to weigh. A bell does not earn its note. It does not ring more truly in a good year and it does not ring less truly in a year when it was in a box. The note is not a performance the bell puts on. It is what the bell is, and it was put there by the one who poured it.
You were made for this and not merely allowed into it, and there is no version of your week with the power to un-pour what God poured. Scripture puts the verb on Him from the first clause to the last, and His Spirit is not standing by waiting for a show of usefulness before He will agree with it.
Now I want to be careful, because there is a way of hearing this that would set a new weight on you, and I am not doing that to you. I am not telling you to stop making the joke. The joke has kept you company for years. Some of us learned early that if you name the worst thing about yourself first, in a light voice, you get to decide how it lands, and that is not a character flaw, that is a skill somebody had to acquire young. I am only telling you it is not accurate. You may keep it in your pocket and know it is not true.
Right now, as you read, you are one of God's people, and nothing about the last seven days had a vote in it. He promised a people for Himself, in writing, and the same Spirit who made that promise live in the first place is the one living in you while you sit there with a mug going cold.
So here is this morning, and it asks nobody's cooperation and needs no room but the one you are standing in.
The bell was never in the wrong box. That is the part worth sitting with. It was in that box for nineteen years and it was a bell the entire time, and on the day it came out it did not need repairing, tuning, or introducing to anyone. It only needed ringing.
You do not have to become one of God's people. That work was finished in a pour you were not present for and could not have helped with. What is left is the ringing: saying the true thing out loud in your own voice, in your own kitchen, and hearing what it sounds like in the air instead of in your head, where you have kept it under guard for years.
You have the standing to say it out loud, and the saying is not a formality. Go and look it up. Real authority to speak what God has already settled is written into the plain terms of the New Testament, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a spoken word and does with it whatever He is going to do.
Declare this over yourself
Say these where your own ears can hear them. You have standing to speak because Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the authority in these lines belongs to the word and never to the volume of your voice, with the Holy Spirit as the one who makes them live. What God does with them after that, and how, and by which morning, is His to decide, and you will bless Him for the way He answers.
- Box marked miscellaneous, you are not where God keeps me. Isaiah 43:21 says this people have I formed for myself, and a bell that rings whole after nineteen years in the dark was never a leftover.
- Spare part in the kingdom, you are not my name, and in Jesus' name you have no claim to stay. God poured a people for Himself and He poured me in that pour, and what He made on purpose does not get filed under whatever was lying around.
- Lord, You formed me for Yourself and not to fill a gap, and I am one of Your people this morning at full weight. I thank You that my week was never once consulted about it, and I am ringing today, because that is the thing You made me to do.
Isaiah 43:21
