The Naming Happened Without A Meeting

This message is for to stop hunting for the moment he was admitted, by a man who cannot point to any occasion on which he was welcomed in and has concluded he never was

It is ten past two in the morning and a man is scrolling backward through nine years of photographs on a cracked phone, hunting for one picture he is not sure was ever taken.

He knows exactly what he wants. A hand on a shoulder. A room with folding chairs and bad lighting. Somebody's face turned toward him at the second it happened, so that there would be a face to point at. Instead he scrolls past a dog. A scaffold. Four hundred shots of the same alley wall he has painted and repainted since he was nineteen. A cousin's wedding, a plate of rice going cold, a sunrise over a parking lot he did not think was worth keeping and kept anyway. No room. No chairs. No hand.

Somewhere around the fourth year back he stops and says it out loud to nobody, in the flat voice people keep for two in the morning. "There is no picture because there was no night."

He puts the phone face down on the arm of the couch. The ceiling goes that particular gray. And he lies there doing the thing you do, which is going back through it all looking for the meeting. You want the minutes of it. You want a date you could write inside the cover of a book, one evening when somebody official enough said your name out loud and the room agreed and that was that. You cannot produce one. So you have quietly filed yourself under people who were never actually let in, who have been standing in a doorway for years now, being very polite about it.

And you have been careful with it, too. You have never made a scene. You pray, and you mean every syllable of it, and you would argue this in the street with anyone who wanted to go. But when the house goes quiet there is a small clerk at the back of your head with a rubber stamp and no ink in it, and he wants the paperwork, and you have never once had anything to hand him.

There are no minutes because there was no meeting

I want to take the clerk's job away from him, and there is one passage written for exactly that purpose.

Hosea was told to give his children names that were verdicts. Not-my-people. Not-loved. Names a child carries through a whole town, out loud, so that every time somebody calls that child in for supper the entire street hears the sentence again. That is how the book opens. It is unbearable, and it is supposed to be.

Then God reverses it. Not by convening anything. Not by reviewing anybody's conduct or hearing anybody's case. By speaking. And Paul reaches back and lifts the line out centuries later, because it is the only line that will do the work:

As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.Romans 9:25

Look at who is doing the verb. Not them. Not a body that sat and considered them. I will call. The whole of it is one mouth speaking, and the ones being named are not in the room, are not consulted, and never sign a thing.

You are one of God's people at ten past two in the morning, and there is no minute of any meeting anywhere that made you one. That is not a kind thought I had for you to sleep on. It is God's own sentence in Romans 9:25, lifted out of Hosea and set down centuries before you were a rumor, and the Holy Spirit is what carries a sentence that old across all that distance and lands it on a man with a phone in his hand.

Which means the search has been running for the wrong kind of object all along. You have been hunting evidence of an event. What God describes is not an event you attended. It is a name spoken over a people, and a name has no photograph. A name has a speaker.

You were named before you had any story to tell about it, and the naming is not waiting on your memory to confirm it. The word puts that naming in God's mouth and in nobody else's, and His Spirit does not stand by for a man's recollection before an accomplished thing is permitted to be true.

A record is not the cause of the thing it records

People keep the paper. That is not foolish and I am not laughing at it. A date written in pencil inside a cover, a photograph, a shirt somebody never wore again: we are made of time and we need somewhere to put it, so we keep things.

But no child was ever caused by a certificate. The paper records; it does not produce. And what happens on that couch at two in the morning is a grown man concluding he was never born because he cannot find the form.

Then there is the grammar, and this is the part I would not skip. Them. My people. Which were not my people. Plural, all the way down. This is not a story about one person being singled out and quietly honored. God does not make favorites one at a time and issue them a lanyard. He makes a people, He makes it out of people who had no claim whatsoever, and putting a man inside it is what He does with them.

You have a place inside a plural that God spoke over a whole people, and the plural is the thing you were put into. God said it through Hosea in Hosea 2:23 and then had Paul write it down again in Greek generations later, twice, in writing, and the same Spirit who moved both of those men is the one who read you into it.

That is also why the quiet in your kitchen is not evidence against you. A plural does not turn singular because you cannot see the rest of it from where you are sitting. There are believers awake at this hour in languages you have never once heard spoken, saying roughly the four things you said at two in the morning, and not one of them can see you either, and the thing all of you are inside is not built out of sightlines.

You are a member of this by God's own act, and you were never on a waiting list for it. Scripture nowhere describes this as an application, and the Spirit did not hand you a number and point you at a bench by the door.

The breakthrough

So the work in front of you tonight is not remembering.

Hear that properly, because it lifts something off you that you have been carrying as though it were yours. Nothing here is sending you anywhere. Nobody is telling you to walk into a building, or find the room, or produce the evening. If none of that is available to you, nothing written here changes by one word.

The work is to let the clerk go.

You have nothing left to find, because the finding was never yours to do. That is Romans 9:25 standing where it has stood since Paul set it down, and His Spirit does not need a photograph to work from.

Declare this over yourself

Say these where you are, out loud, and do not wait for a more suitable hour. There is no more suitable hour. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is the standing an ordinary person speaks from; the authority is His, delegated, and the Holy Spirit is what makes a word live once it leaves your mouth, rather than the steadiness of the voice that says it. Jesus said that whoever shall say unto this mountain, be thou removed, and shall not doubt in his heart, shall have whatsoever he saith (Mark 11:23). Saith. Out loud, with a mouth. So speak these three to the clerk at the back of your head, and whatever He does about the people around your life, that is His timing and it is not yours to arrange.

  1. Two in the morning, you are not the one who decides who belongs to God. Scripture has God saying I will call them my people, which were not my people, and He said it through Hosea long before I had a memory to hand anybody. The naming happened without a meeting, and I am one of them tonight.
  2. Verdict that I was never actually let in, you are overturned in the name of Jesus. The word says God calls a people His by His own act, and His Spirit is the one who read me into the plural. There is no doorway left for you to keep me standing in.
  3. Lord, You named a people out of people who were not a people, and You did not hold a meeting about me in order to do it. I thank You that the naming is Yours, and that my memory of it was never the ground I was standing on. I am one of Your people at ten past two in the morning, and nothing in nine years of photographs decided that.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
