Greater Than All, And That Is The Hand

The chain let go at the hook and came back through the air past his head fast enough that he sat down in the gravel without deciding to.

He was fine. That is the first thing to say. He sat there a minute with his heart going and then he got up and did what anybody does, which is walk the length of the chain looking for the failure. And the chain was perfect. Every link on it, forty feet of it, not a mark. The hook had a hairline in the throat of it that he could not have seen with his eyes if he had spent the afternoon looking.

That is how it always goes and every man who has pulled anything knows it. The chain does not break. It is the hook, or the eye, or the pin, or the strap where it rubbed on a corner for two years. The load finds the one component that was not rated for it, and the rest of the rig can be beautiful and it makes no difference at all.

You have run this inspection on yourself. Four moves in fifteen years, or however yours goes. Each time the calls thinned out around month five and were gone by month nine, and the first two times you called it circumstance, and the third time you stopped calling it that. You know your own pattern now. You could name the month it happens.

So you have made the finding, and it is not self pity, it is engineering. You are the hook. And that is why you have quietly stopped reaching, because there is no sense hanging a load off a component you already know the crack is in.

Read the verse and notice what it never mentions

Jesus is being pressed by a crowd that wants a plain answer, and He gives one, and it is one of the flattest sentences in the Gospels.

My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.John 10:29

Read it for what is in it and then read it again for what is not.

What is in it is a hand and a rating. Greater than all. That is a capacity statement, and it is the kind of number that ends an argument rather than starting one, because there is no second figure to compare it against.

What is not in it, anywhere, is the sheep. Their grip is not mentioned. Their consistency is not mentioned. Their record over the last fifteen years is not entered into the calculation at all, and it is not left out by accident, because Jesus is speaking to people who knew exactly what sheep are like. Sheep are famous for one thing. They are famous for wandering off.

You are held by a hand that was rated for this long before you were born. John 10:29 rates the hand and never once rates the sheep, and the Holy Spirit is what set you inside the grip that verse is describing.

So here is your engineering error, and it is a subtle one, which is why an intelligent man can live inside it for years. Your finding was correct. You probably are the weakest component in this. Where you went wrong is the next step, where you assumed the load was hanging on you.

You have a keeping that does not run through your consistency. That is written, and in red letters in most editions, and the Spirit is not renegotiating a thing Jesus already said out loud in front of witnesses.

Sized to the hand, not to the hook

Any rigger will tell you that you rate a system by its weakest element. That is the rule and it is a good rule and it has kept a great many people alive.

But it only applies to the elements that are actually in the load path. There are components in every rig that are along for the ride. They are attached, they matter, they are part of the assembly, and if they failed tomorrow the load would not move an inch, because the weight was never routed through them.

That is where your consistency sits. It is real, it matters, and it is not what the weight is on.

You were never the link the load was on. The word gives the capacity, and the same Spirit is the one who hung you on it, which is why a bad year has not put you on the ground.

Now let me be honest with you about what this page cannot do, because I would rather be useful than warm.

I cannot promise you people. I do not know who is coming into your life. Nobody writing anything anywhere knows that, and anybody who tells you they can see somebody arriving in the next year is guessing at your expense. I am not going to hand you an imaginary friend to make the ending come out nicer, and I am not going to tell you your family will come round, or that the ones who drifted will call.

What is settled is not the arrival. What is settled is the keeping.

And that is the ground, and I want it stated plainly rather than implied. You are among God's people because the Father gave them to the Son, and because the Father's hand is greater than all, and because nobody has the strength to take one of them out of it. Not a stranger. Not a congregation. Not a move, a silence, a season, or you on your worst month. That is the ground. Not your record. Not your grip.

It is already settled, and your worst year has no claim to stay on the account. Scripture puts the load on the Father's hand, and the Holy Spirit is exactly why you have not come off it during the stretch when you were not holding on to anything.
