Kept TogetherPsalm 37:28

He Does Not Forsake His Own

This message is for to have permanence stated plainly, by a woman who has been left enough times that she now leaves first

She keeps a sentence ready. It has been ready for about three weeks.

It is a kind sentence. That is the whole craft of it. Things have gotten so busy on my end, and I am not much use to anybody at the minute, so please do not wait on me. Nobody argues with it. Nobody chases. It closes a door so gently that the other person usually thanks her for being honest, and then that is that, and it has worked every single time she has used it, which is more times than she would say out loud.

Nothing is wrong. That is the part that would be hard to explain to the woman it is aimed at. The woman has done nothing at all except be steadily, uncomplicatedly glad to hear from her for eleven months, and that is precisely the trouble, because eleven months is about the point where she can start to picture the ending. She can feel one coming the way old people feel weather in a knee. And somewhere along the way she learned that it hurts appreciably less if she is the one with her hand on the door.

She would not call herself bitter and she would be right. She is not bitter. She is efficient. There is a difference, and the difference is that bitterness argues and efficiency just quietly gets there first.

The policy has spread, though. That is the thing she has not looked at directly. It started with people and it has crept outward, and now, when she thinks about the people of God at all, she thinks: even if I found them, I would lose them the way I have lost everybody else. So there is no point starting.

If you keep a sentence like that ready, then you know it is not really about anyone in particular. It is a woman standing with her coat already on, in a room she has not sat down in yet.

Read who the verb belongs to

I am going to give you the plain statement first and unpack it after, because you have had enough of things being led up to.

For the LORD loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.Psalm 37:28

They are preserved for ever. Not they hold on for ever. Not they manage to keep hold of each other for ever. Preserved is a thing done to somebody by somebody else, and the psalm has already told you who: the LORD, in the clause immediately before it, who does not forsake His saints.

Which means the permanence in that sentence is not a description of anybody's grip. It is a description of God's keeping.

Right now, as you read, you have a permanence that has never once depended on your ability to hold it. Psalm 37:28 puts the verb on God's side and leaves it there, and the Holy Spirit does the holding.

Sit with that against the habit, because the habit has a logic and the logic is not stupid. Your logic runs: everything I have held has come loose, therefore anything I hold from now on will come loose, therefore let go early and control the loss. It is a reasonable conclusion drawn from real evidence, and I am not going to talk to you as though you invented the pain to be difficult.

But every step in that argument assumes you are the one holding. Take that assumption out and the whole thing collapses, because the psalm is not describing something you keep. It is describing something that is being kept, and the keeper does not tire and does not get eleven months in and start looking for the exit.

You are one of God's people and He is the one keeping you among them. That is written flat, with no conditions hung on it, and the same Spirit who inspired the line is keeping you inside it while you read.

He used the exact word for what was done to you

Notice which word the psalm chose. Forsaketh not.

It did not say nobody will ever walk away from you, and I am not going to say that either, because it is not written and I will not hand you something God did not say. What is written is that God does not forsake His own. The psalm reaches for the precise word for the thing that has happened to you, more than once, and puts God on the opposite side of it.

And notice what it is grounded in. The LORD loveth judgment. He loves what is right. Abandonment is not in Him, not as a mood on a bad day and not as a policy after eleven months, because it would be against His own character, and His character is the only thing in this universe with no give in it anywhere.

You have a keeper who does not have leaving in Him, and that is a fact about Him and not a hope about you. It is promised in writing and the promise rests on His character, and the Holy Spirit is what makes His character personal in a person.

Now, I am not going to tell you that people are coming. I do not know that and neither does anybody who has said it to you, and a promise about human arrivals is exactly the kind of thing that gets said warmly and then leaves a woman worse off than before. So I will not.

What I will tell you is that the human absence and the belonging are two separate questions, and you have had them welded together for years. Whoever comes and whoever goes, your place among God's people is being maintained by Somebody who has never once let go of anything He took hold of.

You are held tonight, and the holding was not renewed this year on your performance. Scripture puts the keeping in His hands and never once in yours, and His Spirit has not eased His grip for a single day of the last decade.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is quieter than you would expect.

You do not have to stop being the woman who leaves first by trying harder to stay. That is just the same weight handed back to you with a different label on it, and you would be holding it again by Thursday. The turn is smaller and it is this: the thing you have been bracing to lose is not in your hands, so bracing has no work to do.

It is already settled, and the settling was done by a God who does not forsake. He put it in writing in Psalm 37:28, and the Holy Spirit has not let one word of it lapse.

You are one of God's people tonight, on the ground of His keeping and His character, and not on the ground of how many times you have been left or how well you can hold on this year. The sentence you keep ready has no jurisdiction over that. It never had.

Declare this over yourself

You speak this on ground that is held for you and not by you, and the standing to speak belongs to you by His keeping and not by your record of holding on. You speak it under God's hand, leaving to Him what He does about every person in your life, and when, which is His to decide and not your burden to carry. Psalm 37:28 tells you who does the preserving, and His Spirit makes them hold as fact and not as a resolution you would have to keep.

  1. Sentence I keep ready, you are not needed here and I am putting you down. Psalm 37:28 says the Lord forsaketh not His saints and that they are preserved, and preserved is a thing done to a person, not a thing they manage. God is keeping me among His people and this was never mine to hold together.
  2. Verdict that I lose everybody, you are overturned in the name of Jesus. The Lord loves what is right and forsaking His own is not in Him, so the permanence in that verse is a fact about His character and not a report on my history. I am kept tonight and my grip is not what is holding it.
  3. Lord, You do not forsake and You have never started. I am handing You the one that is heaviest and I am saying out loud whose people I am. You are keeping me among them, You are keeping them, and I am unpacking the boxes.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
