Kept Together1 Peter 1:5

Kept By A Power That Is Not Yours

This message is for to be garrisoned rather than to stand guard, by a woman who is exhausted from maintaining everything herself

The round takes eleven minutes if she does it once and nineteen if she does it twice, and she does it twice.

Back door, handle down, key turned, handle tried. Stove knobs, all four, pressed with a thumb even though she has not cooked since two. Faucet. Window in the back bedroom, which does not open anymore but gets checked anyway. Smoke alarm light, blinking green. Front door, chain, mail slot flap held shut for a second because of the draft. And then back through the whole thing again in the same order, because the first time does not count, the first time is just to know where everything is.

She has done this every night for a long time. It is not really about doors and she has always known that. She is the one who remembers the birthdays. She is the one who sends the message first, every time, and has never once let the gap get long enough to be a gap, because she knows exactly what happens if you let go of something for a month. She has a whole list of people she used to have and she can name, for each one, the week she stopped doing the round.

On the coldest night of the year she gets four steps into it, and then she sits down on the stairs in her coat, and she does not get up.

She sleeps there, badly, and wakes at twenty to six with a jolt and her heart going, and the light is coming up gray and then gold through the glass in the front door. Out in the street the bakery van is doing its brakes. Somebody's gate. A jogger. The ordinary sound of a morning that came anyway.

And she sits on her own stairs in her coat with the round unfinished, and the thought arrives sideways and knocks the wind out of her.

Something has been holding all of this all night, and it was not me.

You know that stairway. You have been the night watch on your own life for years, and you are so tired, and the sentence underneath all of it is the one you would not say out loud to anybody: even if I found people, I would lose them, the way I have lost everybody else.

Kept is a garrison word

There is a line in Peter's letter that people read as a comfort and it is actually a military report.

Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.1 Peter 1:5

Kept. The word underneath it is the word for a garrison. It is what you say about a walled city with soldiers posted around it, watching the approaches, awake in shifts, all night, every night, whether or not anybody inside the walls is aware of it. It is not a hand cupped around a candle flame. It is not somebody hoping you make it. It is a guard mounted on a perimeter.

You are inside a walled city tonight, and the watch on it was posted by God. 1 Peter 1:5 puts that garrison word in writing, and His Spirit is on the wall whether or not you can hear anybody up there.

And the verse tells you whose. Kept by the power of God. Peter names the power on purpose, in writing, so that nobody reading it would ever have to wonder whose strength the whole thing was resting on. The question you have been quietly answering with your own body every night since you were young is a question the text closed before you were born.

You are kept, and the verb is passive, and the keeping is being done to you. 1 Peter 1:5 names the power that does it as the power of God, and the Holy Spirit is that power at work in you rather than a mood you have to keep up.

Look at what that does to the round.

A garrison does not need the city to stay awake. That is the entire point of posting one. The people inside the walls sleep, and they sleep precisely because somebody else is not sleeping, and their sleeping is not negligence, it is the appropriate response to being guarded. You have been standing your own watch inside a garrisoned city for years, in the dark, in your coat, walking the perimeter of something that already had soldiers on it.

You have a guard posted around you that you did not hire and cannot wear out. That is the word's own military word for it, and the same Spirit who inspired the sentence is posted at the part of the wall you cannot see from here.

What the keeping actually covers

Now let me be plain with you, because you have been told cheerful things before and they cost you something when they did not come true.

I am not going to tell you that people are on the way. I do not know that. Nobody writing to you knows it, and a promise like that dressed up as faith is just a bill that arrives later, and you have paid enough of those.

Here is what is settled, and it is not smaller, it is underneath.

Your place among the people of God is not held by your maintenance of it. It is not held by the message you sent first, or the birthday you remembered, or the gap you did not let get long. It is held by the power of God, which means the mechanism by which you have lost people in the past is not the mechanism by which this is kept, and the thing you are most afraid of losing is not on the list of things that can be lost that way.

You were never the thing holding this together, not for one night of it. Scripture says kept by the power of God, and it says it in writing so nobody has to guess whose power, and His Spirit is not asking you to take a shift on the wall.

That is why the exhaustion is not a sign that you are failing. It is a sign that you have been doing a job that was already covered. And putting it down does not put anything at risk, because the risk you have been managing all these years was not the risk you thought it was.

It is already held, your place among His people, and it is not held by whatever strength you have had this year. 1 Peter 1:5 puts the keeping squarely on God, and the Spirit keeps it there on the nights you cannot finish the round.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is the whole of it.

You have been guarding a belonging that was never in your custody. Put it down. Not with a big decision and not with a feeling, just the way a person finally sets down a bag they have been carrying so long that their arm has forgotten what empty feels like.

You will still love people. You will still send the message first sometimes, because that is how you are made and it is a good way to be made. But it will stop being the wall. The wall is God's, and He has never yet fallen asleep on a shift, and He is not waiting to see whether you can keep up your end of a thing He described as His own power.

Right now, as you read, you are garrisoned, and the watch does not depend on you being awake for it. He put that in writing in 1 Peter 1:5, and the Holy Spirit is not informing you of the guard, He is the guard.

Declare this over yourself

You have the standing to say these out loud, and the standing is not how much you have left. It is written, and His Spirit is awake on the wall while you speak it, and you are seated with Christ whether you are walking the round or asleep in your coat on the stairs. What God does about the empty places, and when, is His, and however He answers it you are not putting a date on Him by speaking. Say these as a woman with her coat off, not as a woman halfway through the round.

  1. Round I have walked every night of my life, you are not what has been holding this together. 1 Peter 1:5 says kept by the power of God, and it names whose power in writing so that nobody has to guess. I am garrisoned today and I am not the guard.
  2. Verdict that I lose whoever I find, you are overturned in the name of Jesus. My place among God's people is not held by my maintenance of it, so it cannot be lost the way the others were lost. It is held by a power that is not mine.
  3. Lord, You are the one who does not sleep on a shift, and You called it Your power and not my faithfulness. You are keeping me among Your people tonight. I put the list down and I rest inside Your wall, in the name of Jesus.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
