The first time she told it, she told it in the car, out loud, to nobody, before she told it to anyone real. Three times through, trimming as she went. And here is what she trimmed: not the parts that were untrue. The parts that were too much. The details that would make a listener's eyebrows move. By the third rehearsal the account was about two thirds the size of the thing itself, and she had done that deliberately, so it would be small enough to be believed.
It was not small enough. The first person she told listened well and said, at the end, in an entirely kind voice, that these things are usually more complicated than they look from one side. The second person she told loved her and got upset on her behalf for about ninety seconds and then began, gently, to explain the other point of view, which she had not asked for and had already spent nine months constructing on her own in the dark. The third person did the thing with the face. You know the thing with the face. It is not disbelief exactly. It is the arrival of a small reasonable doubt, and it crosses a person's features for about a fifth of a second, and once you have seen it you never stop seeing it.
There was not a fourth telling. You know the exact moment you decided that, do you not. Yours may have been in a parked car or at the end of a phone call or standing at a sink with the water running so nobody would hear you not talking. And after that the account went where accounts go when they have nowhere else: inward, downward, quiet.
So now it lives in one place only, which is you. Not written anywhere. Not held in anybody else's memory. And a thing that only one person remembers starts, after enough years, to feel like a thing that might not have happened, and that is the part nobody warns you about. It is not the wrong that follows you into the parking lot of a building you cannot walk into. It is the growing suspicion that you are the unreliable one.
There is a book, and you were never the one keeping it
Before anything lifts, let me tell you what I am not going to do, because you have been braced for it since the first line.
I am not going to argue your case. Not because it does not deserve arguing, but because I was not there, and because a woman who has been disbelieved three times does not need a fourth person forming an opinion about her. I am also not going to explain the other side to you. You have had that. Nobody goes in the dock in this article, in either direction. That is not softness. It is that the thing you actually need is not a verdict against anybody. If it were, nine months of building their case in your own head would have fixed it, and it did not.
What you need is to be seen accurately. Once. By somebody whose account cannot be corrected.
David wrote this while he was on the run, in the hands of people who wished him harm, with nobody to corroborate a word of it. Read what he asks for. It is not a ruling.
Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?Psalm 56:8
Tellest is the counting word. God numbers the wanderings, one at a time, the way you would count something valuable. Then the tears go into a bottle, kept, not spilled, not evaporated, not written off as an overreaction. Then the book, and the question is asked in the tone of a man who already knows the answer.
You have a complete and accurate record of that day held by God Himself, and it was never dependent on your ability to make anybody believe it. Psalm 56:8, and then look who the verbs belong to: He tells, He puts, He keeps, all three of them His. The Spirit who did that keeping is the same Spirit sitting with you now.
Notice what is not in the verse. No corroboration. No second witness required. God did not wait to hear the other side before He wrote it down, because He was in the room, and He does not form views, He knows.
You were seen at full size, on the day itself, at the scale it actually was and not the two thirds you rehearsed in the car. Not my sentence. It is written, and the Holy Spirit carried it into you before I opened my mouth, and He has never once needed a supporting statement before He would call a thing what it is.
Your place was never held by that room
Now the second thing, and it is the one this whole message is for.
Somewhere in those years a quiet transaction happened that nobody witnessed either. You stopped being able to walk into a building. Fair enough. But underneath that, something else moved: you began to suspect that your place among God's people had been kept in that building, and that when you walked out of it you left the place behind on a chair.
You did not. It was never in there. A room cannot hold a standing it did not issue.
Let me be plain about what I am not saying, because you have had enough people with opinions about your Sundays. This message has no view on where you sit or whether you sit anywhere, and it is not setting you a date. Nobody here is going to tell you to go back, and nobody here is going to tell you not to. That is not my business and it is not the subject.
You are one of God's people this afternoon, and what happened in that building did not have the authority to remove you. Written, and written about you, and the Holy Spirit does not take a vote from a building before He keeps somebody.
And this is not a consolation for the excluded. Read the Psalm again and see who is speaking: a man with no congregation, no address, no character reference and no one to back his story, who is nonetheless entirely inside the people of God while he is hiding in a cave. His standing did not dip on the days he could not be seen anywhere.
You have a place among them that is intact this afternoon, and it has been intact through every year you could not go anywhere. He wrote it down and it stands written still, that He does not lose one of His own, and the Holy Spirit is the seal on it.
So here is this afternoon, and it requires no room, no explanation and no apology from anybody.
You have been carrying two jobs. The first is the wound, and that is real, and I am not going to hurry it, and healing is God's to do at His own pace and by His own hand. The second job is the archive. You have been the sole custodian of a record nobody else would receive, and that job is the one that has been quietly eating you, because a person cannot be both the one who was wounded and the one who has to keep proving the wound.
Hand the archive over. It is already in His book. You were only ever holding a copy.
You have a place among God's people that no building granted and no building withdrew, and it is yours today with nothing pending. Scripture settled that long before you had an opinion about yourself, and the Holy Spirit does not reopen what the word closed.
Declare this over yourself
Say these where you can hear them. You have standing to speak because Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the authority is the word's and never the strength of your voice, with the Holy Spirit as the one who makes it live. What God then does with the wound, and how, and by which season, is His to decide, and you will bless Him for the way He answers.
- Account that three people could not receive, you are written down somewhere better. Psalm 56:8 says my tears are in His bottle and my wanderings are in His book, and the record that matters was taken by a witness who was in the room.
- Doubt that crossed a kind face, you have no claim to stay in me, and in the name of Christ you are put out. God counted it at full size on the day itself, and I am not the archive anymore, because He has been holding the original the whole time.
- Lord, You saw all of it and You kept all of it, and I still belong to Your people this afternoon with nothing outstanding. I thank You that no room ever issued my place and no room could take it back, and I am handing You the file, because You have had the original since the day it happened.
