Nobody Can Take You Out Of That Hand

This message is for to find out whose grip actually holds his place, by a man who believes one decision by one leader removed him from the people of God

The key is still on his ring. Three years later. It is a plain brass one with a worn edge, and it opens a door he has not walked through since the Tuesday afternoon somebody sat across a desk from him and said a sentence, and the sentence ended something.

He has taken that key off four times. He knows exactly how it goes. He gets the ring open with a thumbnail, works the key around the coil, drops it in the ashtray of the truck, drives to the end of the road, and by Thursday it is back on the ring. He could not tell you why. He has told himself it is because you should not throw away a key that is not yours to throw. That is not why.

It is because taking it off would mean agreeing with what he thinks happened. And what he thinks happened, in the part of him that talks at two in the morning, is that one man in one office moved him out of the people of God. Not out of a building. Not off a list. Out of the people. He has never said that sentence out loud to anybody, because when you write it down it sounds unhinged, and he still believes it every single week.

And you have a key like that. Maybe not brass. Maybe it is a photograph you did not delete, or a road you take the long way around, or a whole Sunday you spend being carefully busy. You are not carrying it because you are bitter. You are carrying it because somewhere in you a question never got answered, and the question is this: whose hand was my place ever in? Let us go and find out. I am not going to tell you what I think of that Tuesday, and I am not going to defend it either. That room is not the subject here.

Whose hand was it in to begin with

Name the pit first. The pit is not the sentence that was said to you. The pit is what your heart concluded from it, and the two are not the same thing, and nobody has ever separated them for you out loud.

What your heart concluded is that your standing among God's people was being held by a human decision, which means it could be handed to you and it could be taken back. And once a man believes that, every door in the world becomes a door he might be put out of, and the safest thing is to stop walking through doors.

So the whole matter turns on one question, and Jesus answers it in a single sentence about His own hand.

You are held by a grip that was not in that office. John 10:28 records whose hand it is and what cannot be done to it. The Holy Spirit is why a sentence spoken in another century lands in a gravel lot three years after a Tuesday.

And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.John 10:28

Read the object of that verb. Not out of the building. Not off the roster. Out of my hand. That is where Jesus locates your place. And then look at who the verse rules out: any man. Not any hostile man. Not any unqualified man. Any man at all, including good ones, including sincere ones, including men doing what they honestly believed was right on a Tuesday afternoon.

The very next verse doubles it. He says the Father who gave them is greater than all, and nobody is able to pluck them out of the Father's hand. Two hands, one place, and the grip in both of them belongs to God.

You were never being held by a person, and you are not being held by one now. Jesus promised it out loud and John wrote it down, and the Spirit does not renegotiate a promise because a door closed.

A room is not a people

Here is the distinction that will do more for you than anything else in this piece, and it is not clever, it is just true.

A congregation keeps records. Somebody has to. There are rosters and rotations and lists of who is doing what, and those lists are real and useful and I am not sneering at a single one of them. People made those lists and people can change them. That is what a list is for.

The people of God is a different object entirely. It was not assembled by administration. It was made by God out of those who were not a people, and Scripture describes it with words like fold and body and household and nation, which are all words about what something is rather than words about who is currently listed.

A list can drop your name. That is a thing a list can do. A fold is a thing a Shepherd keeps, and Scripture does not record a single instance of the Shepherd being outvoted.

You have a place in the fold, and it was never stored in a filing cabinet. That is written into John 10:29 under the Father's own name, and the Spirit witnesses to it in you without waiting for any building to countersign.

I want to say the next part carefully, because you have been handled roughly enough. I am not building a case against anyone. I have sat with pastors and I have sat with the people they let down, and I have learned that a man who takes up your case is usually taking up something you did not ask him to carry. You did not come here for a verdict on somebody else. You came here to find out if your place is intact.

It is intact. That is the finding. And it is intact on a ground that has nothing to do with whether that Tuesday was handled well or badly, which is exactly why it can hold you now, when you may never get an answer about the Tuesday at all.

You are one of His, and no decision made about a room reached the place where that is kept. Romans 8:38 lists out everything that cannot separate you and leaves nothing off. It is written, and the Spirit was given to you precisely so that a written list like that could be believed by a man in a truck.

The breakthrough

So we come to it. The thing you have quietly believed since that Tuesday is not true. It is not slightly overstated. It is not true.

One decision by one leader can end a role, close a door, empty a chair, and cost you people you loved. Every one of those is a genuine loss and I am not going to shrink any of them to make my point smaller. What that decision could not do, at any point, in any office, with any signature under it, is remove you from the people of God. That was never in a human hand to move.

And notice what this does to the key on your ring. It stops being a verdict and becomes just a key. It can go in a drawer or stay on the ring or go back to whoever it belongs to, and none of those three tell you anything about your standing. That question is answered somewhere else and it was answered in your favor before you got out of bed today.

You are one of God's people right now, in a gravel lot, with a key you have not been able to throw away. Scripture settled whose hand this is in, and the Spirit has not opened that hand once.

Declare this over yourself

A believer has standing to speak, not because the words are strong but because the word is, and the authority to say it was delegated and never invented: Jesus taught His people to say a thing and not waver in the heart. The Spirit is what makes the written word live when a man opens his mouth. So say these as a man agreeing with God about facts, and know that the outcome is His and every timetable along with it, because His will toward you is good.

  1. Decision made in that office, you did not move me out of the people of God. John 10:28 says no man plucks them out of His hand, and no man includes the man who signed it. My place is held by a grip that was never yours.
  2. Verdict that I was put out, you are overturned in the name of Jesus. Christ is holding the very thing you claimed to have taken, and He wrote down that nobody takes it. Go, and take that Tuesday afternoon with you.
  3. Lord Jesus, You called Yourself the good Shepherd and You said that none of Yours are plucked out. You are holding me now with the hand that was opened on the cross for a people. I am still Yours, and the grip is Yours to keep.
